For my wedding i got personalized champagne glasses with our names on them with the date and pretty little hearts…I'm planning on putting them on the table with the rest of the dinner ware so that people could use them durring the reception. I think this is one of the best things i could think of and they are pretty cheap…considering

Some people might throw them out, and some won't. If you really want them, do it. I would suggest doing 2 different favors and alternating. I think that's a really cool idea, I did for my wedding, that would also make you not think you wasted your money, because you're not using as much!
I made Cd's with songs played at the wedding, and i also gave little photo albums that matched our invitations and guest book.
There are so many things you can personalize, and there are ways to do it cheaply by looking online. Spend some time searching and it will pay off!

Honestly, I would throw a personalized candle favor away, if I even bothered to take it home. If you want something personalized, do a personalized box and fill it with some sort of candy.

I really enjoy having something useful from the wedding that reminds me of the couple, like a bookmark or magnet. A candle sounds great. Personalized candy is fun, but I like something I can keep around, something I can use.

Favors in general are often left behind unless they are edible (and are likely to be eaten before the guests ever leave the reception). So your friend is right, chocolates would be a better idea than personalized candle votives. If you want to give personalized candle votives to special people (parents of the couple, etc) I recommend spending a little extra to have them engraved and then give that as your gift to them rather than as a "favor".

That being said….. Favors are unnecessary and really are just an expense that a couple already spending so much on the other wedding expenses really should let go. Do not let the wedding industry as a whole make you feel as though you are being "rude" or "tacky" should you decide to eliminate the favors. You aren't! You're hosting a party where you pay for their food, drinks, and entertainment. Your guests will not remember the favors 10 yrs later (frankly, they probably wont remember them 10 min later). What they WILL remember is the atmosphere, the fun, and the love. When you figure the average wedding guest attendance is around 100 people and the average cost of favors is around $2.50 you're talking $250 spent on stuff that really doesn't matter… Spend that money on the entertainment or the food and make your reception memorable… don't waste it on the favors.

Give them sugar cookies or chocolates something they can eat otherwise they will just trash it.

Actually, at the last wedding I attended, they gave away personalized shot glasses. They had the bride and groom's names, the wedding date and a picture of a couple dancing on them. I LOVE MINE!! It's great, and you can use it afterwards.

Personalized wedding favors are cute (at the time), but no one that I know really hangs onto favors from somebody elses wedding. The only favor I have from a wedding is a magnetized photograph the couple had a big basket of at the reception. Now THAT I liked!

I am in the same situation as you, and the honest truth is that your friend is right. I am actually considering "PhotoFavors" which is where u hire a separate…. a second photogarpher (not the one for ur pictures) but the 2nd photographer will take professional pictures of your guests as they come in to the reception cite and he will then print them out and ur guests can pick them up on ur their way out. This way even though it doesnt say ur names anywhere, when ur guests are asked "thats a nice picture, where did u take it?" they can say it was taken at ur wedding. I think Im opting for that.. good luck!
