Comments on: what is the duty of a wedding planner?

Unfortunately it seems as though your friend didn’t do much research before choosing her planner. I am a wedding planner and depending what was in the contract, the wedding planner might not be in the wrong. Wrapping wedding favors, printing out programs and all other extra duties are supposed to be done by the bridesmaids, or any other family members who have agreed to help…unless otherwise stated in the contract. The wedding planner, I promise, had to do much more than the three of you…even though it seems like you haven’t slept and are getting sick of things, you agreed to help once you accepted your duty in the bridal party.

I think that a wedding planner’s top priority is making the wedding day go off without any problems. Does this mean making the bridesmaids run around doing her work? NO! She’s getting paid to get these things done. If she needs extra help to get her tasks accomplished then she should look to her staff to help her out, not the bridal party. She should want you bridesmaids to be there for the bride, you can’t do that if you’re running around doing her errands.

wedding planner and wedding coordinator are not always the same…
Wedding Planner - could range from helping plan only, no "hands on" work to full coordination and "day of" services

Wedding Coordinator - always has some type of "hands on" services

Wedding coordinators will help plan & assist the bride in carrying out the plans for the wedding. They are generally not the "favors and invitations" people. You will occasionally get one that will help in whatever way the bride wants, but generally they delegate tasks to those best suited for them and she is best suited to do follow-ups with the vendors and take care of the bride’s last minute needs. Believe me, if she is anything like myself - she is working harder than you are and getting even less sleep than you. The last week before a wedding is a nightmare for almost everyone involved.

wedding planners generally do the planning. if that means that they need people to do decorations and favors then that’s what they need you to do. also it is part of your bridesmaid duties. my bridesmaids helped me do my own favors and i made all the place cards and invitations. but if you feel that there is too much stuff being handed to you, discuss that with the planner and ask her for an explanation behind her madness. also, how far away is the wedding? some places that do favors won’t do them in such short notice and will send the pieces to the bride and have her put them together. also it is cheaper to dyi rather than pay someone else to do it for you. just think this is for your friend and it’s not about you. you want to help her much as she can b/c trust me, she’s probably freaking out inside right now.

i planned my own wedding and did everything pretty much myself with the exception of some favors. i set up and decorated and designed everything in my wedding…. i cried my eyes out the whole week because of stress! just help her out, it will be worth it
